 Ride Along Program:

Ride Along ProgramThe Boston MedFlight Ride Along Program was designed to expose healthcare personnel in our service area to the theories and concepts of air medical transport. Information regarding criteria and indications for helicopter use, safety around the aircraft, the procedure for activating BMF, and the scope of practice of the flight team will be addressed.

Our first priority is to accommodate prospective employees, employees in training, and team members who accompany the medical crew on specialty missions. As part of our affiliation with the hospitals in Boston, we also provide an educational opportunity for physicians in training to observe our procedures.

Barring any scheduling conflicts, fire fighters, police officers, EMT's, paramedics, first responders, ED and ICU nurses are encouraged to ride along.

Candidates must:

  • Be employed by an EMS agency or hospital in the BMF service area and in good standing with that employer for at least one year
  • Weigh less than 180 lbs while fully clothed
  • not have participated as a ride along at any time within the past 36 months
  • not suffer from motion sickness

If interested, submit a written request to:
Boston MedFlight
Robins Street
Hangar 1727
Hanscom AFB
Bedford, MA 01730
Attn: Ride Along Program

In the letter, please identify yourself and the agency that employs you. Include your height and weight, three dates you are available to ride along and a daytime telephone number. Include a photocopy of your professional license or certification and a letter from your supervisor supporting your candidacy. You will be contacted by telephone for final scheduling. Space is at a premium and ride along schedule may vary based on BMF operations.

 Community Events:
Boston MedFlight participates in a variety of community events. These range from safety orientations to program introductions. Some of the community events we participate in include:

Safe Proms

Safe Proms
Drama enactments, coordinated with school districts involving fire, police, EMS, and school participants serve to increase awareness of injury risk during the prom season. Boston MedFlight is usually invited to participate by the organizing agency, usually the local fire department.

Static Display
Boston MedFlight aircraft will land at a pre-designated landing zone to provide public exposure to our service. The opportunities include local Health Fairs, mass casualty drills, and EMS system demonstrations.

Safety Orientation
A program designed to introduce the concept of the air medical transport to pre-hospital EMS personnel. The 2 hour didactic session includes instruction on how to activate Boston MedFlight, state trauma triage guidelines, setting up a landing zone, preparing a patient for transport and scene safety.

Prevention ProgramsPrevention Programs
These include lectures designed to introduce children to strategies to prevent injuries. Each program is adjusted to the audience's age. Topics include: playground safety, bicycle safety, helmet usage, fire safety, and accessing emergency help.

Program Introduction
This monthly educational offering is designed to introduce healthcare workers to air medical transport. Regular participation is arranged with the medical schools in the Boston area and includes Emergency Medicine residents from the tertiary care centers.

Case Reviews
Boston MedFlight medical personnel review specific patient transports with the sending agencies for the purpose of quality assurance.

Pediatric ReunionPediatric Reunion
A yearly venture by Boston MedFlight held in conjunction with a group of Child Life Specialists from tertiary care centers in Boston and Providence in order for children to "revisit" their earlier medical transport experience.
